When you employ someone for the first time, you must register as an employer with HMRC. This is to inform HMRC that your employee has started working for you.

Employers have a responsibility to calculate the tax and national insurance contributions (NIC) of your employee, and then withhold this from their pay and submit this to HMRC on their behalf to be received by the 19th of the following month or the 22nd if electronically paid.

Also you have a responsibility to pay an additional employer’s NIC which is paid at the same time.

On 6 April 2013 employers across the UK started reporting their PAYE information to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) using Real Time Information RTI.

All payroll information must be reported online. JB’s Book-Keeping Services will do this for you. Otherwise, how you send your reports will depend on the payroll software you use.

You cannot use PAYE Online to report your payroll information - you need adequate payroll software that can send your information to HMRC directly, and you'll need an internet connection.

Why it's Important

It is vital to make sure figures are calculated correctly, so that you make the correct payments.

By not calculating Tax and NICs correctly may endure you to pay more than you have to. If you pay HMRC less than you have to or you have returned the incorrect details you will pay interest and other penalties.

What we can do

We register you as an employer and ask your employees to fill out starter forms.

On a weekly or monthly basis, you tell us the rate of pay and how many hours worked for each employee.

We will calculate the tax and NIC’s for you and provide you with payslips for your employees.

By using Commercial Payroll Software - after the relevant payroll details are entered into a software package the necessary reports will automatically be sent to HMRC. It connects using your Government Gateway login details.

We will also submit your end of year returns to HMRC and provide P60’s to your employees at the end of the year.
